The Cowlitz Indian Tribe is seeking to fill two seats for the Cowlitz Tribal Gaming Commissioner. The minimum requirements for appointment as a member of the Tribal Gaming Commission shall include a basic knowledge of gaming management, business, finance, or law. Commissioners must satisfy the suitability standards set forth for key employees and primary management officials and must pass a detailed background investigation.
The Commission is an independent and autonomous agency of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. The Commission and its staff are responsible for regulating all gambling activities on the Cowlitz Reservation and ensuring that gaming is conducted in conformance with Tribal law, federal law, and the Gaming Compact between the Tribe and the State of Washington. The Commission acts as an oversight body for agency and its Executive Director, who is responsible for day-to-day operations. The Commission conducts licensing and barring appeals, adjudicates patron disputes, reviews and approves agency budgets, participates in government-to-government meetings with co-regulators, and helps direct regulatory policy decisions.
No member of the Cowlitz Tribal Gaming Authority (CTGA) or employee of the gaming operation may serve on the Tribal Gaming Commission, and no person directly related to any CTGA board member may serve on the Tribal Gaming Commission without a written waiver by the Tribal Council. Tribal Gaming Commissioners are prohibited from gambling at the Tribe’s casino.
Time Commitment:
- One regular monthly meeting: 2-3 hours/month. Typically held the last week of each month in the evening. Commissioners can attend remotely via video conference.
- Occasional (1 to 3 per year) special meetings: 1-2 hours per meeting.
- Annual training and conferences: 2-5 days per year.
- Introductory orientation training: 2-3 days.
