Census 2010 Reminder
Randy Russell, Enrollment Officer

Just a reminder the 2010 Census is just around the corner. Census forms should be received in the mail the week of March 15-19, a reminder from Census will be mailed late March reminding those that have not returned their form to do so. CENSUS FORMS ARE DUE APRIL 01, 2010. The form is short and consists of 10 items.

We encourage you to identify as Cowlitz Indian Tribe on the tribal identification line, the census office request tribal affiliation by legal name of tribe. If your family consists of more than one tribal affiliation you can only claim one, if you list more than one the tribe mentioned first is the one that will be counted.

It is important we are all counted as Native Americans and more importantly by the tribe we identify ourselves with. The federal government distributes more than $400 billion annually to tribal, state and local governments based on the current census data.

Cowlitz Indian Tribe is unique in that we do not have a land base, at this time. Our tribal members will be counted at their place of residence when filling out the form, so if you live in Olympia, WA the City of Olympia will get the count and Cowlitz Indian Tribe will get your count as you identified Cowlitz Indian Tribe.

Please encourage family members to complete and return their form and to identify themselves Cowlitz Indian Tribe. If the form is completed and returned via mail there is not further contact from Census. If no form is returned via mail from your household a Census Representative will come knocking on your door sometime after 04/01/2010. Information provided on your census form is safe and confidential, the information is seen by or distributed only to Census employees.
