Position Summary: Cowlitz Indian Tribe operates three (3) clinical sites in Washington State. This is a full-time support position within the Health Department which is comprised of substance use disorder, mental health and medical services. This is a full time non-supervisory position with primary responsibilities for collecting, posting and managing third party insurance account payments. This position is in Longview, Washington.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Reviews electronic health records for purpose of submitting claims to 3rd party insurers.
Prepares and submits medical claims including but not limited to Mental Health, Substance Use Disorder, and Family Practice.
Verifies insurance eligibility and obtains prior authorization, as needed, for services provided.
Monitors claims to ensure that payment is received in a prompt timeframe and documents follow up process.
Reconciles and posts payments.
Prepares patient statements as needed and follows up to ensure payment is received.
Notifies Billing Supervisor of unpaid claims and delinquent patient payments as specified by supervisor.
Provides support to patients on billing issues.
Works with providers to educate about billing issues as needed.
Assists with credentialing of new providers.
Provides direct support for the administrative activities of the Cowlitz Tribal Health Receptionist and Patient Benefits Counselor and Contract Health including billing support, eligibility determinations, data gathering or collection, and writing of reports.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years’ experience working in a medical billing or medical office.
Must be able to accurately type 60 words per minute, including 10 key.
Basic coding knowledge and medical terminology education needed. Current certification as a coder is preferred.
Must have knowledge of coding rules, documentation rules, OIG rules, CMS rules, HIPAA and/or be willing to learn these rules and follow them carefully within one month of hire.
Must have strong communication and customer service skills for working with internal and external customers.
Must have working knowledge of office equipment such as fax machine, copier, scanner, etc.
Intermediate skill in using Microsoft Office products, primarily Word and Excel.
Must have working knowledge and understanding of CFR 42, as it pertains to patient confidentiality and adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
Must have current billing certificate or be certified within 1 year of hire date.
Must be knowledgeable about insurance carrier websites and how to obtain the information when needed.
Have knowledge on how to read a Remittance Advice or Explanation of Benefits.
