Welcome and hope you can join us!
The Cowlitz Indian Tribe program to participate in the 2008 Canoe Journey—Paddle to Cowichan is well underway. It is a drug‑and‑alcohol‑free program open to all Tribal Elders, Members, Family, Kids, and Friends.
Your participation and support is welcome and appreciated. Donations of time or money, no matter how much will greatly benefit the program.
If you are interested in becoming an active participant, take a look at the 2008 Cowlitz Family Canoe Program Schedule and mark it on your calendar. We have day trips and camping trips planned.
There is no set commitment needed. Any time you spend with us will be welcome.
Join us for some or all of the upcoming Inter-Tribal Canoe Journey. It is a huge event which involves countless other Tribes. Come see us for the day or maybe spend a night with us. If you wish any additional information or to donate, please send an inquiry email or call one of the following:

It is a wonderful way to live our culture and our heritage.
Practice is fun
As of April 26, 2008 we have had 5 trips.
An attempt was made to dip for smelt on the Cowlitz River in early February. We didn’t get any fish, demonstrating the dire situation of our threatened smelt!
Then we traveled down the Columbia River from Kalama past Longview to the Willow Grove boat ramp just out of Longview. On this trip we stopped at the spot where Coffin Rock stood and paid our respects to all our Cowlitz ancestors.
Our last trip took us down the Columbia River from Ridgefield to Kalama.
2008 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)
The big goal this year is to participate in the 2008 Canoe Journey—Paddle to Cowichan
The Cowichan people live just north of Victoria BC on Vancouver Island near the city of Duncan. This year they are hosting the 2008 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)
NAIG was founded in 1987 by the National Aboriginal Sport Circle:
NAIG MISSION STATEMENT
To improve the quality of life for Indigenous peoples by supporting self-determined sports and cultural activities which encourage equal access to participation in the social/cultural fabric of the community they reside in and which respects Indigenous distinctiveness. — North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)
The Games will start right after the Tribal Journey Potlatch.
Both events will be impressive and fun! Whether it’s a Journey stop in Puget Sound or at the Canoe Gathering in BC, you are welcome to join in our cultural renewal.
We have scheduled many pulls at different spots all over lower Puget Sound, Columbia River, Cowlitz River, and Lewis River. All scheduled days are for all Cowlitz Family and friends to either witness or participate. These are listed in the 2008 Cowlitz Family Canoe Program Schedule.
